Depression is the most common condition that's associated with suicide. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse have an increased risk for suicide. Depression causes symptoms that affect how you think, feel, and handle daily activities. 

Signs and Symptoms of Depression:

- Repeated sad and anxious mood

- Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt

- Decreased energy 

- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

- Weight changes / Loss of appetite

- difficulty sleeping or oversleeping

- Headaches, cramps, or digestive problems

- Suicidal thoughts or attempts

How Depression Can Happen in Teens and Adults:

- Sexuality, bullying, weight, academic problems, certain personal traits, or being a victim of abuse

- Family problems

- Experienced stressful life events, such as parental divorce or the death of a loved one

- Having a learning disability 

- Long-term unemployment, long-term isolation, and work stress are more likely to cause depression. 

- Family history of depression can have an increased genetic risk

- Worrying a lot, having a low self-esteem, perfectionist, or sensitive to personal criticism 

- Drug and alcohol abuse
